Bio Ethanol Fuel for Bioethanol Fireplaces

Bio Ethanol Fuel for Bioethanol Fireplaces

Bioethanol is the fuel used in a bioethanol fire, just as wood is used in a wood stove. Bioethanol fuel is a liquid that is filled into the burner of the ethanol fireplace and ignited to create flames. Without bioethanol fuel, a bio fireplace would not be very functional.

Bioethanol fuel, as the name suggests, is a form of ethanol produced by the fermentation of sugars and starches found in many biological materials. Bioethanol fuel for use in bioethanol fires is most often produced from potatoes, corn, and sugar cane.

What Exactly is Bioethanol Fuel?

Bioethanol fuel is ethanol produced exclusively from biomass or from biodegradable waste. Some types are produced exclusively from plant waste such as wood, straw, or whole plants — in such cases the ethanol is also referred to as "cellulose ethanol".

It was first used in the 1970s during an oil price crisis, when oil became unaffordable or economically unviable for many people. Bioethanol was rediscovered as a viable fuel alternative at that time and also helped to recycle surplus agricultural products during the period.

Bioethanol fuel can be used in both indoor and outdoor bioethanol fires — at home or in a restaurant, for example. If you would like a scented flame, you can use scented bioethanol — though be aware that it should be placed around the burner rather than inside it, to avoid an unpleasant smell from the burning fuel.

Which Bioethanol Should I Choose for My Bioethanol Fireplace?

When choosing bioethanol fuel for your fireplace, consider the purity of the fuel. Look for bioethanol with an alcohol percentage of between 95% and 97.5%. Higher purity fuel burns more cleanly, providing better flame quality and reducing odours and residue.

Always choose bioethanol fuel that is certified for use in fireplaces and meets safety standards — this ensures a safe and efficient burn. Should you have any questions, you are always welcome to contact our expert team for advice.

Why Not Use Bioethanol Fuel with 100% Alcohol?

That is, of course, a very good question. Wouldn't a bioethanol fuel with 100% alcohol content be the best and cleanest option? There is some truth to this — however, bioethanol with 100% alcohol burns faster, hotter, and with a larger flame than bioethanol with, for example, 96.6% alcohol. Not all bioethanol fireplaces are built to withstand these conditions.

Note: It is rare for a bioethanol fireplace to be designed for use with 100% alcohol bioethanol fuel.

So, whilst all bioethanol is alcoholic, not all bioethanol is suitable for use in your bio fireplace. Always check the recommended alcohol percentage for your specific fireplace in the manufacturer's manual.
