Fire Tables: Real Flames at the Centre of Your Outdoor Space

A fire table combines a functional outdoor table with a built-in burner, so the flame becomes the natural centre of the patio, the terrace or a restaurant's outdoor seating area. Unlike an open fire pit, a fire table gives you a surface for drinks, plates and candles around the flame, while the burner adds warmth and atmosphere as the evening draws in. In this collection you will find fire tables running on gas or bioethanol, in sizes from compact side tables to large lounge tables for a full seating group. To see our full outdoor range, browse our outdoor fires and patio heaters.

Gas or Bioethanol: Choosing the Fuel

Gas fire tables are the most common choice for outdoor use. They usually run on LPG from a standard gas bottle, which is often hidden inside the table base or in a matching side table. Gas gives a powerful flame and a high heat output, and the flame can be adjusted easily with a control knob or, on automatic models, with the push of a button or a remote control. Some Planika models are also available for natural gas, for a permanent installation with a fixed connection. The choice between LPG and natural gas is made when you order and cannot be changed afterwards. A fixed gas installation must always be carried out by a qualified gas engineer. You will find more gas models in our collection of gas fire pits and fire tables.

Bioethanol fire tables need no gas bottle, hose or connection. You simply fill the burner with bioethanol and light it, which makes these tables easy to place and move. The flame is softer and more decorative than a gas flame, and the heat output is generally lower, so bioethanol is ideal if atmosphere matters more than maximum warmth. Read more about the right fuel in our guide to bioethanol fuel for bioethanol fireplaces.

Choosing the Right Size and Height

Start with how you want to use the table. Fire tables come in different heights, and the height decides how the table fits into your seating:

  • Low fire tables work like a coffee table and suit lounge sofas and armchairs. This is the most popular format for relaxing evenings on the terrace.
  • Chat-height tables sit slightly higher and suit lounge chairs with a more upright seat.
  • Bar-height tables are made for standing or bar stools, and work well for drinks, parties and restaurant terraces.

Next, look at the size and shape. A small round or square table suits a balcony or compact patio, while larger rectangular, oval and organic shapes give space for a full seating group. As a rule of thumb, leave room for people to move comfortably around the table and keep the chairs at a pleasant distance from the flame. Round tables create a sociable circle, while long rectangular tables fit naturally between two sofas.

Heat Output and Flame Control

Heat output is stated in kilowatts (kW). Among our gas fire tables, outputs range from around 8.5 kW on mid-size lounge tables to 16.5 kW on larger models such as the Estate Square 88, which is enough to keep a seating group comfortable on a cool evening. A higher output also means higher gas consumption, so check the consumption per hour in the product description if you want to know how long a gas bottle will last.

Most fire tables let you adjust the flame, so you can turn it down for a calm, decorative fire or up when the temperature drops. Automatic models add electronic ignition, a remote control and, on some Planika models, app control.

Safety and Placement

Fire tables with gas are designed for outdoor use only and must not be used indoors, as they cannot be connected to a flue. Under a partial roof or in a garden room, make sure that at least a quarter of the total wall area is open so the air is exchanged properly. For bioethanol models, always follow the manufacturer's guidance on room size and ventilation.

Place the fire table on a flat, stable surface and keep a good distance from parasols, awnings, plants, cushions and other combustible materials, especially anything that can move in the wind. Keep the space above the flame clear. Never leave a lit fire table unattended, and keep children and pets at a safe distance. For gas models, check the hose and connections regularly, and close the valve on the gas bottle after use. For bioethanol models, only refill the burner once it has cooled down. Read more in our guide to bioethanol fireplace safety distances and fire risk.

Accessories and Care

A protective cover keeps rain, dirt and leaves off the table when it is not in use and helps it last longer. In winter, store the table somewhere dry if possible, or at least keep it covered. Clean the table top with a mild cleaning agent once the burner has cooled completely, and check regularly that the burner is free from dirt and debris. You will find covers, glass windscreens, lava stones and side tables that hide the gas bottle among our accessories for outdoor gas fires.

Other Ways to Bring Fire and Warmth Outdoors

If you would rather have a taller heat source that warms a larger group, take a look at our gas patio heaters. For a classic wood fire, explore our fire pits. And if you have questions about size, fuel or placement, we are happy to help you find the fire table that suits your outdoor space.
